The Rev. James S. Goodwin, priest of the Fargo Diocese, will present the annual October Spiritual Appetizer at 7 p.m. Monday at St. James Basilica, 422 First Ave. S., Jamestown.

The Rev. James S. Goodwin, priest of the Fargo Diocese, will present the annual October Spiritual Appetizer at 7 p.m. Monday at St. James Basilica, 422 First Ave. S., Jamestown.

His presentation, “Be-tween the Rock and a Hard Place, the Teaching Authority of the Church,” will focus on sacramental marriage and annulments, as well as the relationships between Scripture, tradition and the magisterium in preserving the truths of Christianity.

An Indiana native, Goodwin converted to the Catholic faith after studying the church fathers at a Protestant Seminary. He was ordained by the late Bishop James Sullivan for the Fargo Diocese. His specialty is helping people understand the rationale of Church Doctrines.

Goodwin has served the parishes of St. James, Jamestown, St. Phillip’s in Hankinson, and is currently serving as pastor of St. Stephen’s in Larimore. In addition, he studied Canon law at Catholic University of America and works at the Marriage Tribunal. Goodwin was recently elected president of the Presbyterate for the Diocese of Fargo.

The annual Spiritual Appetizer is a gift of the ladies of the Tabernacle Society to the community. College students, youth and other adults are invited to learn the theology and pastoral care related to annulments and the resources of the Catholic Church in developing faith and living a Christian life.

Dessert and beverages will be served in the Parish Center following the presentation.
