Dickinson rentals spark complaints

City officials in Dickinson say they’re fielding complaints about too many people living in rental houses. Commissioner Shirley Dukart said complaints involve up to seven people living in one home, creating parking and noise problems.

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — City officials in Dickinson say they’re fielding complaints about too many people living in rental houses.

Commissioner Shirley Dukart said complaints involve up to seven people living in one home, creating parking and noise problems.

City ordinance allows for only four unrelated people living in one house in residential areas generally meant for single-family dwellings.

City Engineer Shawn Soehren said the city has sent letters to landlords it suspects might have more than four unrelated people living in a rental.

Police Chief Chuck Rummel said the ordinance is difficult to enforce, because proving that someone who is not on the lease is actually living in a house isn’t easy.
