Letter to the editor: Keep the cell phones out of our libraries

Is all common courteous in a library gone? I remember what a treat it was going to the library as a child. So many books, places to travel, animals to see and adventures to have! My mom always made sure we were quiet and respectful to others at the library.

Is all common courteous in a library gone?

I remember what a treat it was going to the library as a child. So many books, places to travel, animals to see and adventures to have! My mom always made sure we were quiet and respectful to others at the library.

Cell phones and a growing selfishness in today’s society make for an irritating library experience. I need the quiet of the Stutsman County library for doing homework. It is the only place I can find to work as I have three children and am a single mother trying to get a college degree to better support my children. Silly me to believe current library goers would respect other’s wishes for peace and quiet.

Is it that hard to speak quietly? Could a cell phone be put on vibrate so I do not have to hear what new annoying ringtone someone has? How about taking that phone call outside or to your car? I do not want to hear that you are making carrots and potatoes for supper. I love cooking but I am not here to listen to someone’s kitchen experience.

I look forward to the joining of the two Jamestown libraries. Maybe they will keep in mind people in my situation. This is my last try at the Stutsman County Library. Too much commotion there for me.

Could we have a quiet area to work or is the library of old dead and buried?
