Martell earns player of the year award

South Border’s Ross Martell and coach Jason Klusmann were selected as the senior player and coach of the year in Region 1 nine-man high school football for the 2009 season.

South Border’s Ross Martell and coach Jason Klusmann were selected as the senior player and coach of the year in Region 1 nine-man high school football for the 2009 season.

Martell rushed for 1,658 yards and 13 touchdowns this fall, and helped the Mustangs reach the state quarterfinals. South Border, the Region 1 runner-ups, ended the year with an overall record of 8-3.

The Region 1 champion Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter Imperials placed five players on the 2009 all-region team and four more players were picked as honorable mention. The Mustangs received four all-region selections and four honorable mention picks.

Shiloh Christian: Wyatt Knell, Jeremiah Herman, Austin Friesen.

Strasburg-Zeeland: Bobbi Kramer, Mark Baumgartner.

Edgeley-Kulm: Justin Rott, Alex Knudson.
