Fargo might see more roller derby

Organizers of a Fargo-Moorhead roller derby team are looking to plan more events after a successful debut.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Organizers of a Fargo-Moorhead roller derby team are looking to plan more events after a successful debut.

Dawn Mertz with the Fargo-Moorhead Derby Girls squad says the inaugural bout at the Fargo Civic Center over the weekend sold out, drawing nearly 1,700 people. More than 300 people had to be turned away at the doors.

The home skaters dominated, beating a team from Winnipeg. The Fargo-Moorhead team is to travel to Manitoba for a rematch on Jan. 30.

Fargo-Moorhead Derby Girls President Athena Funk says she hopes to schedule another home derby at the Fargo Civic Center in January or February.

The team is a nonprofit group. Proceeds from the weekend are being donated to an autistic boy who is in need of a service dog.
