Special Olympics recognizes helpers

Special Olympics North Dakota honored 15 individuals, organizations and businesses from throughout the state for their outstanding levels of commitment and support. These recipients, along with one inductee into the Hall of Fame, were recognized on Oct. 10 at the Special Olympics North Dakota State Awards Banquet.

Special Olympics North Dakota honored 15 individuals, organizations and businesses from throughout the state for their outstanding levels of commitment and support. These recipients, along with one inductee into the Hall of Fame, were recognized on Oct. 10 at the Special Olympics North Dakota State Awards Banquet.

Jamestown Paradiso was awarded the Special Olympics North Dakota Continuous Service Award. Jamestown Paradiso, in cooperation with local law enforcement and the Law Enforcement Torch Run program, has held four annual “Tip-a-Cop” events to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics North Dakota. The wait staff gives 100 percent of their tips to the event each year totaling more than $3,100. Kevin Arthaud, State Torch Run co-director, who started the fundraiser, said, “What an incredible, supportive, great group of people.”

Wal-Mart was awarded the Special Olympics North Dakota Daryl Bjelde Memorial Award. Since 2003, Wal-Mart has been a statewide partner and friend of Special Olympics North Dakota. It has provided financial as well as in-kind support to local programs and state tournaments as well as providing matching dollars for fundraisers. Additionally, the company employs Special Olympics athletes and Wal-Mart employees are active volunteers in the program throughout several communities in North Dakota. Last year, Special Olympics North Dakota was awarded a grant for state sponsorships and training through its State Giving Program for $50,000.

Also nominated for other awards from the area were Travis Hanson, Jamestown College, James River Correctional Center, James Taylor, Billy Whitecotton, and the Roy and Pam Musland family.
