RAY, N.D. (AP) — A call center in the northwestern North Dakota town of Ray is closing, putting 40 people out of work.

The Medical Arts Press customer service call center is closing Jan. 29, after more than 10 years.

Office supplies giant Staples bought Minnesota-based Medical Arts Press in July 2002. Spokesman Owen Davis said the decision to close the Ray call center was due to the poor economy.

Gerald Ranum, mayor of the town of 550 people, said the loss of 40 jobs is devastating. Owen said workers losing their jobs will get a severance package.

The call center received $42,000 in grant and no-interest loan money from Minot’s economic development fund in the late 1990s.
