Poll: Few changes needed in noxious weeds list

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says a recent poll indicates that little change is needed in North Dakota's list of noxious weeds.

Noxious weeds are those that are required by law to be controlled. The Legislature mandated a review of the state's list by the end of the year.

Goehring says 11 of the 12 weeds on the list were the top vote-getters in the poll his department conducted. He says field bindweed, which is on the list, was edged out in the poll by yellow starthistle and houndstongue.

Goehring says his staff will use the survey results, recent field data and advice from North Dakota State University weed scientists to determine if any changes should be made to the list. The proposed list will be published by mid-December, and a public hearing will be scheduled during the annual Commissioner's Weed Forum in January.
