South Border’s Devin Olson and Ross Martell are both first-team selections to this season’s North Dakota nine-man all-state football team.
The annual list of all-staters, as selected by the state’s coaches, was announced Monday evening.
Olson, a 210-pound junior for the Mustangs, was one of three lineman across the state picked for first-team offensive honors. Martell, a senior running back and linebacker for South Border, was tabbed for first-team defensive honors.
The duo helped the Mustangs to an 8-3 overall record and the team’s first state quarterfinal playoff berth as a co-op. The high schools of Ashley and Wishek first combined to play football in 1992.
Earning second-team all-state honors for South Border was senior defensive back and running back Tallon Lippert. Olson helped spring the running back tandem of Martell and Lippert to over 2,700 of South Border’s 3,500 yards of total offensive in 2009.
Other area athletes named to the all-state first-team defense are New Rockford-Sheyenne’s Brett Allmaras, Kidder County’s Wesley Nicholson, Wells County’s Kelby Houcin and Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page’s James Ihry
Joining Lippert on the second team from around the area are Dakota Prairie’s Tyler Luehring, Lakota-Adams-Edmore’s Tate Aronson and Seth Kuchar, Wells County’s Chris Hoff, Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter’s Donovan Gross and Philip Reuer and Kidder County’s Norman Nicholson.
