The Jamestown High School Drama Department has been working on its late fall production, “Becoming Juliet,” a fast-paced comedy by Dean L. Dyer. The production is at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the high school theater.
The play takes place in Sibley High School where the students and the drama teacher have just learned that the spring play has been cut due to lack of funds. When the drama teacher remembers that Shakespeare’s play “Romero and Juliet” is not only in the public domain but can be found in the students’ literature books, the drama department is once again in business.
However, creating the play does not go smoothly. Questions need to be answered. Who will get the leading roles? Should parts be based on who is dating who? What motivates one of the best possible actors and why does he refuse to take a part? Is love blooming in the school? What happens when one of the leading actors breaks his leg? Can the show really go on? Will solutions be found in time for the show to go on?
Drama coaches Jay Nitschke and Barb Hogan believe the audience will enjoy the performance.
“The students have put in many hours of work and are looking forward to producing this play,” said Nitschke.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
The play is being produced by special arrangement with Heuer Publishing of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
