Diseased citrus fruit intercepted at border

Agents at the U.S.-Canada border station at Portal intercepted citrus fruit infected with a plant disease they say is not yet present in the U.S.

PORTAL, N.D. (AP) — Agents at the U.S.-Canada border station at Portal intercepted citrus fruit infected with a plant disease they say is not yet present in the U.S.

Customs and Border Protection said agriculture specialists in October twice intercepted mandarin oranges that were infected with citrus black spot disease.

Authorities said the fruit was found in the vehicles of travelers coming from Canada who were destined for Sun Belt states, where citrus industries could be devastated by the disease.
