Process to prosecute assaults incorrect

The story “Safe Shelter helps 21 victims of sexual assault in 2011” on page A1 in Wednesday’s Sun incorrectly described the process for prosecuting alleged sexual assaults. The state’s attorney decides whether to prosecute for sexual assault. Additionally, since the Sexual Assault Response Team started approximately three years ago, victims are met at Central Valley Health District, although they may be referred to the hospital for medical care.
