Retail sales posted a surprising increase in February as consumers did not let major snowstorms stop them from racking up purchases. The advance, the biggest since November, provided hope that the recovery from the Great Recession is gaining momentum.

Regulators shut down N.Y. bank

Regulators shut down Park Avenue Bank in New York Friday, marking the 28th failure this year of a federally insured bank. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was appointed receiver of Park Avenue Bank. It had $520.1 million in assets and $494.5 million in deposits as of Dec. 31.

Curves has new owner in Jamestown

Carmen Larson is the new owner of Curves in Jamestown. Larson lives in Jamestown with her husband Kevin, and their son, Jesse, 13. Curves offers a complete workout in 30 minutes. The circuit works every major muscle group so a woman can burn up to 500 calories. Curves also offers free weight management classes.

Petroleum expo planned in May

The North Dakota Petroleum Council will host the 17th annual Williston Basin Petroleum Conference and Expo May 2-4 in Bismarck, drawing about 2,000 industry officials and 200 exhibitors.

Buchmann joins Eddy Funeral Home

Mark Goehner, president of Eddy Funeral Home has announced the addition of Nicole Buchmann as a licensed funeral director. Buchmann joined the staff after completing her internship with Eddy Funeral Home from October 2008 to October 2009. She graduated from the University of Mary, Bismarck, with a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 2007 and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in mortuary science.

North Dakotans travel to DC symposium

Four individuals represented North Dakota at National Symposium on Indigent Defense in Washington, D.C. The event was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Tanata completes basic training

Pfc. Andrew J. Tanata of the North Dakota Army National Guard completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., on Oct. 30, 2009, and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., on Jan. 28. He attended the course of 91B-Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic and is now a member of the 817th Engineer Company (Sapper), James-town.

Shannon promoted to sergeant

Robert Shannon, Ashley, N.D., has been promoted to the rank of sergeant in the North Dakota Army National Guard.

Graff promoted meritoriously

Pfc. Austin Graff, U.S. Marines, was recruited out of Garner, N.C., and attended recruit training at Parris Island, S.C. While attending recruit training, Graff was meritoriously promoted to his current rank for his superior performance.

BBB calls for nominations

The Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota is calling for nominations for its 11th annual Integrity Awards. The BBB Integrity Award recognizes companies that display outstanding ethics in dealings with customers, employees, vendors and the community. All for-profit businesses of any size, owned or operated in Minnesota or North Dakota, are eligible. Nominees must have a satisfactory rating with the BBB; however membership is not a requirement to compete for the award. The nomination deadline is April 30.
