Newbery, Caldecott winners announced

Jack Gantos’ “Dead End in Norvelt” has won the John Newbery Medal for the best children’s book of 2011. Chris Raschka’s “A Ball for Daisy” won the Randolph Caldecott award for best illustrated story.

Mural painting this weekend

The Arts Center is inviting the public to join Ave Maria Village residents in painting a 30-foot mural this weekend in the facility’s hallways. Instructor William Hessian will be leading painters in the project from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Ave Maria, 501 19th St. NE. The mural will feature the history and landmarks of North Dakota.

VSCU faculty show Friday

The Valley City State University faculty will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Froemke Auditorium on the VCSU campus. The evening of music will encompass a variety of styles featuring vocal and instrumental selections. The public is invited to attend. Adult admission is $5, and VCSU faculty, staff and students are admitted free with their ID cards.

When artists draw, they pick up pencils, chalk/charcoals, crayons, pens or brushes and put marks on surfaces. A painter usually uses a brush and a liquid-based medium. Trained artists learn terms accepted across academe as they progress in training.

Jamestown Choralaires sing tonight, Friday

The Jamestown Choralaires take the stage tonight and Friday for the only show of the year that the local men’s singing group will headline. “Get Musical!” will feature the 50-plus-member Choralaires as well as a local boys’ choir, and the two groups plan to perform show tunes and patriotic numbers.
