The Eastern Divisional Oratorical Contest, sponsored by the American Legion, was held in Maddock Jan. 9. First place went to Jonathan Reich, Medina, N.D., second place to Ben Backstrom, Maddock, N.D., and third place to Kaylee Gaarder, Park River, N.D. Reich and Backstrom will advance to the state contest at the Mid-Winter Legion Conference Feb. 6 in Mandan, where they will meet two contestants from the Western Division. The state winner will advance to the national level and compete in Indianapolis. Pictured, from left, are Reich, Backstrom, Gaarder and David Daeley, Eastern Division chairman.
