Bernard F. Steele, 87, Pingree, N.D., died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown. Mr. Steele was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Kensal, N.D., the son of Grover and Florence (Wescom) Steele.

Bernard F. Steele, 87, Pingree, N.D., died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.

Mr. Steele was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Kensal, N.D., the son of Grover and Florence (Wescom) Steele. He grew up and attended elementary school in Edmunds, N.D., and graduated from Pingree High School in 1941. On Oct. 14, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 20, 1943. He married Dorothy Wegman on July 13, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas. They returned to North Dakota where he farmed in the Edmunds area. In 1947, they moved to Pingree, where he farmed his entire life. She died on Aug. 15, 1982. He married Phyllis Betts Dunwoodie on Dec. 14, 1985, in Jamestown. They continued to live in Pingree. He was the Plainview Township supervisor for many years, served on the Pingree School Board and was a member of the American Legion for 60 years. He enjoyed dancing, sporting events and telling stories and jokes.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; four sons, Dennis (Betty), Bismarck, N.D., Donald (Ginny), Pingree, David (Deb), Jamestown, and Delton (Lori), Fargo, N.D.; a daughter, Darla (Mark) Jesser, Dickinson, N.D.; a stepson, Bruce (Liz) Dunwoodie, Lake Stevens, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Barb (Dennis) Sanvig, Charles City, Iowa; two brothers, Clayton (Clarice), Carrington, N.D., and Robert (Denise), Jamestown; a sister, Margie Abernathy, Missoula, Mont.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; two brothers, Delbert and Floyd; and a sister, Darlene Oak.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Victory Lutheran Brethern Church James-town, with the Rev. Shawn Bowman officiating.

Prayer service: 7 p.m. Monday, Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Visitation: 1 to 7 p.m. Monday, Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Burial: Pingree Cemetery, Pingree.

Memorials: in lieu of flowers, to Pingree Cemetery.

I was sad to hear of the passing of Bernard, he will be truley missed, he was such a kind and wonderful man, always good to me. I met him when I would ride with Darla back from college, and he always knew me and talked. God bless you all as you are going through this. Lisa Marchus, Fessenden

We are so sorry to hear of Bernie's passing away.We have enjoyed his visits and stories for so many years at OK Tire in Carrington. He was everybodys friend and liked by all. He will be missed. God bless his family and be with you at this time of need. Curtis and Donna Lee Carrington,ND
