Robert L. Messmer, of Kensal, ND, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at Innovis Health in Fargo, ND.
Robert L. Messmer was born in Bordulac, ND, the son of Tony and Eva (Bassett) Messmer on December 11, 1927. He grew up and attended school in Bordulac.
On July 23, 1945, Robert married Norma Kollman in the Catholic Church in Bordulac. He was employed by the Soo Line Railroad for 40 years, retiring as Section Foreman in 1988. They lived in Cathay and Bordulac in their early years of marriage and moved to Kensal in 1959. They lived in Kensal until 2009, when they moved to Fargo.
He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the Kensal Fire Department, and the Kensal School Board. Robert enjoyed hunting, gardening, and especially spending time with his family and friends. He always loved having the grandchildren with him. Robert enjoyed life to the fullest and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
Robert is survived by his wife of 64 years, Norma; eight sons, Bob (Dorothy), Hoquiam, WA, Glenn (Kathy), Vail, AZ, Joe (Marcie) Nampa, ID, Dean (Barb), Bismarck, ND, Dan, West Fargo, ND, Brian (Becky), Twin Falls, ID, Darren (Kelly), Mandan, ND, Kelly (Chereste), Buffalo, SD; five daughters, Joan (Tony) Rhodes, Arlington, TX, Deb (Mike) Alexander, Winnemucca, NV, Ginger (Mike) Goodman, Cary, NC, Connie (Jason) Gagelin, East Grand Forks, MN, Teresa (Jody) Walker, Grand Forks, ND; daughter-in-law, Janel, Fargo, ND; thirty-five grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; one sister, Jeanette Partlow, Fargo, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jim; two brothers, Clarence and Ervin; and two sisters, Gladys and Gertrude.
Visitation: Sunday, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, ND.
Prayer Service: Sunday, 6:30 PM at St. John’s Catholic Church, Kensal, ND.
Funeral Service: St. John’s Catholic Church, Kensal, ND
