Raymond Burkle, 88, Jamestown, formerly Fredonia, N.D., died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, N.D. Mr. Burkle was born Dec. 27, 1921, at the family farm home northwest of Fredonia, the son of John G. Burkle and Wilhilmina (Schimke) Burkle.
Raymond Burkle, 88, Jamestown, formerly Fredonia, N.D., died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, N.D.
Mr. Burkle was born Dec. 27, 1921, at the family farm home northwest of Fredonia, the son of John G. Burkle and Wilhilmina (Schimke) Burkle. He attended Nathan Rural School and Fredonia Public School. He received his high school equivalency diploma in February 1954. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked at the International Peace Gardens, North Dakota, the Bureau of Reclamation, Yuma, Ariz., and the Grazing and Water Conservation Department Service, Medford, Utah. He studied law and procedure at LaSalle Extension University, Chicago, Ill. He married Alvina Rudolph on July 2, 1944. They lived on the farm northwest of Fredonia where he raised grain and cattle. She died in 1989. He married Thelma (Smith) Hahn on June 6, 1992, at Leonard, N.D. They lived in Jamestown. He helped with haying and upkeep of buildings on his son’s farm after he retired. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown, where he served as chairman, the Sunday school superintendent and a teacher. He served as chairman of the Logan County School Officers Association, was a member of the Logan County School District Re-organization Committee, a clerk of Nathan School District and School Board member of Gackle Public School. He was a charter board member and vice president of Dickey Rural Telephone Mutual Aid Corporation.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma; a son, Glenn (Joan), West Fargo, N.D.; a daughter, Debora (Dale) Holmstrom, Gackle, N.D.; two step-daughters, Joyce (Clayton) Larson, Felton, Minn., and Beverly (Dennis) Heller, Davenport, N.D.; two step-sons, Rodney (Barbara) Hahn, Chaffee, N.D., and Robert (Eileen) Hahn, Fargo, N.D.; a brother, Kornard (Irene) Burkle, Dickinson, N.D.; and two sisters, Alma Kinzler, Jamestown, and Ardena Oelke, Palo Alto, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and 14 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alvina; a son, Wayne; a step-daughter, Betty; his parents; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Martin Luther Lutheran Church, Fredonia, with the Rev. Ruth Kaden officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. Monday, Haut Funeral Homes, Jamestown.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial: Martin Luther Lutheran Cemetery, north of Fredonia.
