LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — The Athletics Federation of Nigeria says retired sprinter Sunday Bada, a former Olympic medalist and indoor world champion, has died. He was 42.

Federation President Solomon Ogba told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Bada died Monday in Lagos. He said the circumstances of his death were still unclear.

Ogba said Bada, who was working as the technical director of the federation, was “very healthy” as far as he knew and had recently attended a Nigeria Olympians Association meeting.

The IAAF said on its website that it was “shocked and saddened” by Bada’s death.

Bada was a member of the Nigerian team that won silver in the 4x400-meter relay at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He also took gold in the 400 at the 1997 World Indoor Championships in Paris.
