Esther W. Hockert, 95, Jamestown, ND, died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at Eventide at Hi-Acres in Jamestown. Esther Backer was born October 24, 1916 near Courtenay, ND, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Moeller) Backer.
Esther W. Hockert, 95, Jamestown, ND, died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at Eventide at Hi-Acres in Jamestown.
Esther Backer was born October 24, 1916 near Courtenay, ND, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Moeller) Backer. She grew up around the Courtenay area and attended Corinne School. On September 26, 1936 Esther married Joseph Hockert at St. John’s Catholic Church in Kensal, ND. They farmed until 1968 when they moved to Jamestown. She helped Joe who was custodian at the St. James Catholic Church for 20 years and at St. John’s Academy for 10 years. They also worked for the Sisters at the Convent and also at the Rectory.
Esther was a member of the Basilica of St. James, Tabernacle Society and St. Anne’s Circle. She planted some of the perennials around the church. She enjoyed family, flowers, gardening and baking, and spending time with her special friend, Glory Ebertz.
Esther is survived by three daughters, Diane Fischer, Jamestown, Lynne Glodrey, Gackle, ND and Debra (Noel) Guthmiller, Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one daughter-in-law, Margaret Hockert, Fargo.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Darrell; two brothers; four sisters; and two sons-in-law.
Eucharist of Christian Burial: 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the St. James Basilica, Jamestown, with Father Al Bitz and Father Bernard Pfau co-presiding.
Visitation: 1:00 to 7:00 PM, Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at the Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Vigil: 7:00 PM, Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel.
Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown, ND.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the St. James Basilica building fund.
