BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — Former Montana Western men’s basketball coach and athletics director Casey Keltz has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 79.
Current Western coach Steve Keller told The Montana Standard that Keltz died early Sunday. He had been sitting at the scorer’s bench on Friday night when Western hit a last-second shot to beat Lewis-Clark State 70-68 in the semifinals of the Frontier Conference tournament.
In January, Keltz received the Ron “Swede” Kenison Memorial Award to honor his contributions to the conference.
Keltz retired in 1996 with 409 career wins in 28 years. He twice took the Bulldogs to the NAIA national tournament.
His 1989 team upset top seeded and defending national champion Grand Canyon University before falling in a second-round game.
Keltz graduated from Western in 1957. He coached the Bulldog football team from 1965-67 before being named the men’s basketball team.
Funeral services are pending.
