Winifred Townsend, 88, Jamestown, ND, died Monday, May 14, 2012 at Jamestown.
Winifred Hoff was born May 20, 1923 to Hugo and Edith (Carlson) Hoff, in Minneapolis, MN. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. On June 12, 1945 she married Emerson N. Townsend and in 1956 moved with her husband and children to Jamestown, ND.
In her early years in Jamestown, she was active in PTA and also organized and was the first President of the Crippled Children’s School (now Anne Carlsen Center for Children) Auxiliary. From 1960 to 1967 she owned and operated Tiny Town, a children’s specialty store. From 1967 to 1974 Winifred worked as a secretary in the Dean’s and President’s Office at Jamestown College. After leaving the college in 1974 she worked at Dakota Bake n Serve until her retirement. In 1976 she and her husband founded the Prairie Post, and for the next seven years until the Post was sold, she wrote the “Post Script” column.
She was one of the founders of Svenska Vanner Swedish Friends in Jamestown, Member of Chapter K PEO, Friends of the Gallery, Red Hats, and Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a life-long Lutheran.
Winifred is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Craig (Janice) Townsend, Charleston, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Meredith “Muffy” (Don) Weisz, Jamestown; three granddaughters, Melissa Hart, Tracy M. Dockter, and Christine (Nathan) Michaelson, all of Jamestown; seven great grandchildren, Alex Hart, Savannah & Max Montoya, Cole & Lola Dockter, and Caden & Brock Michaelson; sister, Marjorie Weir, Minneapolis; niece, Janice (Craig) Dahlberg and her family, Minneapolis; nephew, Steven (Rick) Weir, Dallas, TX. She is also survived by her many devoted friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother-in-law, Wesley; and mother-in-law, Evelyn Olson.
Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown.
Family will receive guests: 6:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., Friday, May 18 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Interment: Hillside Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN at a later date.
Memorials: May be given in her memory to Trinity Lutheran Church of Jamestown, Messiah Lutheran Church TV Ministries of Fargo, or Jamestown Home Health & Hospice.
