Deaths elsewhere for Oct. 20, 2012

Fiorenzo Magni, a three-time Giro d’Italia champion, has died of an aneurism. He was 91.

ROME (AP) — Fiorenzo Magni, a three-time Giro d’Italia champion, has died of an aneurism. He was 91.

The Italian cycling federation announced Magni’s death Friday.

The Giro winner in 1948, 1951 and 1955, Magni was a rival of cycling greats Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali.

Italian cycling federation president Renato Di Rocco says that Magni was “respected and feared” by Coppi and Bartali, and that he helped revolutionize cycling by opening the sport to companies not associated with bicycles.

Di Rocco called for a minute’s silence in Magni’s honor to be held before every cycling race in Italy this weekend.
