Joesph Eugene Stroh, 90, Jamestown, died Feb. 25, 2009, at Hi-Acres Nursing Center, Jamestown. Mr. Stroh was born March 24, 1918, at Trinity Hospital, Jamestown, the son of Edward and Freda (Klein) Stroh.

Mr. Stroh was born March 24, 1918, at Trinity Hospital, Jamestown, the son of Edward and Freda (Klein) Stroh. He attended elementary school at Island Lake School, south of Urbana, N.D. and grew up in the Eckelson, N.D., and Urbana area. He entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 6, 1942, at Fort Snelling, Minn. He served as a gunner on a tank destroyer in the Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe campaign. He was wounded on March 10, 1945, and was hospitalized until he was discharged Oct. 10, 1945, at Topeka, Kan., with the rank of T-4. He married Elizabeth Magdalene Reiss on May 8, 1943. They lived on a farm near Windsor, N.D., where they farmed until he retired in 1980. They moved to Jamestown in 1996. He was a member of St. Mathia Catholic Church, Windsor, St. James Basilica, Jamestown, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign War. He enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife; six sons, Joseph Jr., Paul (Karmen), Steve, and David (Dorene), all of Jamestown, Robert (Sally), Bismarck, N.D., and Frank, Guam; nine daughters, Carolyn (Terrance) Hazer, Woodworth, N.D., Jeanine (William) Altringer, Sanborn, N.D., Rosalyn (Kenneth) Dockter and Mary (Clydell) Dockter, both of Streeter, N.D., Dorothy (Michael) Robyt, Noreen (Duane) Andersen, Patricia (Larry) Wahl, and Betty Jo (Bruce) Oster, all of Jamestown, and Theresa (Bob) Frohlich, Bismarck; 36 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death his parents; two daughters-in-law, Nancy Stroh and Anne Stroh; two brothers, Wilbert and Bernard; four sisters, Amanda, Bernice, Agnes and Bernadine; and a grandson, Kyle Snow.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, St. James Basilica, Jamestown, with the Rev. John McGinnis officiating.

Prayer service: 7 p.m. Sunday, Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Visitation: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
