Jim Douglas Evanson, 88, New Rockford, N.D.

Jim Douglas Evanson, 88, New Rockford, N.D., died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at Carrington Health Center, Carrington, N.D. 

Mr. Evanson was born March 18, 1921, at Northwood, N.D., the son of Jerome Harris and Lulu Esther (Tornbom) Evanson. He grew up in Northwood and Aneta, N.D., areas until the family moved to California in 1935. He graduated from high school in 1939, and then served in the Civilian Conservation Corps until 1940. He was drafted into the U.S. Army Signal Corps in June 1942, and served in Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and the Solomon Islands until his discharge in 1945. He attended Jamestown College, Jamestown, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949. He attended graduate school at Washington State, Purdue University, North Dakota State University, Hamline, the University of North Dakota and Moorhead (Minn.) State University. He married Mary Hart on June 4, 1949. He taught high school math and science at New Rockford High School for 17 years and then taught art for another 13 years, retiring in June 1982. He served as director of the New Rockford 4th of July pageant, on the Dakota Prairie Regional Center for the Arts board and the Human Rights Committee at 4th Corporation, and was active in the Retired Teachers Association, the Methodist Church, Democratic NPL and AARP.

He is survived by three sons, Charles (Karen), New Rockford, John (Kim), West Fargo, N.D., and Doug (Dawn), Redmond, Wash.; two daughters, Emily Hilgers, Moorhead, Minn., and Anna (Doug) Hoffman, Williston, N.D.; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and two brothers, Jerome Jr., and Charles.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, United Methodist Church, New Rockford, with the Revs. Dale Emery and Lori Broschat officiating.

Prayer service: 6:30 p.m. today, Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

Visitation: 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial: Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford.
