Opinion Corner: Unofficial end of season
The Memorial Day weekend signifies different things to different people. For many it’s a long weekend with an extra day off — not in this profession, of course. In my neighborhood the normal convoy of campers and boats that line the streets and driveways were gone — escaping to relax at a lake, cabin or campsite somewhere, although I hope they brought an extra blanket or two.

Opinion Corner: Wizards, like Thunder, soon to disappear
Most are aware that Bismarck is losing its minor league basketball team — the Dakota Wizards. The Bismarck Tribune has done a really good job chronically how the successful 17-year-old franchise will soon be relocated to northern California near the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. Both teams are owned by the same group.

Opinion Corner: Some fun with the Forbes list
Tiger Woods ($60 million). LeBron James ($53 million). Kobe Bryant ($52.3 million). Those numbers sound about right for what top athletes should earn in a year. They’re known everywhere and are great at what they do. It’d be hard to argue they don’t deserve it.

Hafner nearing return
Travis Hafner appears close to returning to the diamond. The Cleveland Indians designated hitter will begin a minor-league rehab stint today with the Columbus (Ohio) Clippers, Cleveland’s Triple A team. Hafner, a Sykeston, N.D., native, has been sidelined since May 24 and underwent surgery on his right knee on May 31. He had experienced fraying and irritation in his meniscus, although he was unsure what caused the injury. It was his sixth trip to the disabled list in the last five years.

Twins court cheap pitching
The Minnesota Twins are desperate for starting pitcher, but don’t appear willing to spend much money on it. Numerous media reports have the pitching-needy Twins interested in lower-tier, or cheaper, pitching alternatives despite coming off back-to-back last-place finishes in the American League Central division. The Twins currently have just one starting pitcher set for next season in left-hander Scott Diamond.
