Pheasant popularity in state goes way back
Check the annals of Lewis and Clark during their time in what is now North Dakota, and you’ll find references to native grouse, elk and pronghorn, and even about 10 entries related to grizzly bear. Don’t believe me?

Getting involved good for everyone
If I tried to list all the organizations and clubs just in North Dakota that are working to advance the cause of fishing, hunting, trapping, conservation, education and training, I’d likely fill most of this column.

Future of hunting, fishing looks like mixed bag
When it comes to looking ahead at how 2013 will shake out for hunting and angling, I can’t help but see a mixed bag of prospects. On one hand, North Dakota now has more managed lakes with fish in them than at any time since statehood.

Big three lottery a hot topic
The deadline to submit an application for the 2013 North Dakota moose, elk and bighorn sheep license lottery is March 27. Even though the odds of drawing one of these “big three” licenses is small, you of course can’t get one if you don’t fill out and send in a paper or online application.

Changing of the seasons
For most corners of North Dakota, the 2013 winter has extended well beyond the calendar declaration of spring. Except for a few robins in the trees, Canada geese filtering in and the first pitch of Major League Baseball, spring has really struggled to win over winter.
