N.D. workers return home after Okla. tornado
Pilot Liz Lillard was in Williston on Monday as she watched a live feed of a massive tornado pass over her children’s day care in Moore, Okla. “It’s the worst feeling in the world to watch a tornado go over your two kids and there’s nothing you can do about it,” Lillard said. Lillard, a contract pilot for Hiland Partners of Enid, Okla., flies workers to and from North Dakota, which is where she was when disaster struck Monday.

GRAFTON, N.D. — The Westside Drive-In here is old school, harkening to the days of poodle skirts, customers ordering by speaker phone and car hops delivering the fast food on trays to be attached to car windows. However, Friday’s price of the Wagon Master burger was not from days gone by.

Other Views: N.D. oil investments support investment
North Dakota’s potential as a crude oil and natural gas producer continues to grow. The U.S. Geological Survey recently released new, much higher estimates for the recoverable oil in the state. That’s important because it implies investors in wells and infrastructure are more likely to see a solid return, all else being equal.

House rejects oil tax reform bill
House legislators Wednesday rejected an oil tax reform bill that would have lowered the oil extraction tax, closed a tax loophole for low-producing wells and set up guidelines for a new tribal tax agreement. Rep. David Drovdal, R-Arnegard, said the conference committee met 17 times to reach a compromise on House Bill 1234, which aimed to reform several oil tax provisions while staying close to revenue neutral for the state. The bill failed 71-21.

Crew camp plan: Proposed crew camp ordinance receives more changes
A proposed crew camp ordinance still needs some work, the Stutsman County Planning and Zoning Board decided Tuesday. The Zoning Board and an audience of about 20 people met to discuss the second draft of a county ordinance that would regulate crew camps in Stutsman County. Though the county currently has no crew camps, it is working on updating its ordinances in case someone wants to build one — perhaps to house construction workers building at Spiritwood Energy Park.
