Laurits “Pete” Nelson, 60, succumbed to cancer, died in his home on Monday, May 20, 2013. L. Peter Nelson was born on April 4, 1953, in Jamestown, ND, son of June C (Baird) and Clarence P. “Howdy” Nelson. He attended school in Edgeley graduating from Edgeley High School with the Class of 1971. Pete entered the US Air Force in September 1971 and served until December 1974 when he was honorably discharged.

Burn ban possible: Conditions dry in this area; 13 grass fires reported in May
Stutsman County officials may consider a burn ban if conditions don’t improve, according to Jerry Bergquist, Stutsman County emergency manager. Fire departments within the county have fought 13 grass fires in the first 10 days of the May with the largest blackening about 60 acres.

The South Central Region of North Dakota won an award for having the lowest regional error rate in the state for its food stamp program in 2012. The region includes Stutsman County, which had an error rate of 0 percent last year. The region's error rate was 2.63 percent.

Two counties institute burn ban
Dickey County and LaMoure County have instituted a burn ban, utilizing the state’s fire danger index, which is set by the National Weather Service. People are not permitted to burn when the fire danger index is set at “very high” or “extreme,” or when the NWS issues a Red Flag wind warning. On days when the fire danger index is lower than that, people are permitted to burn, said Charlie Russell, the emergency manager and 911 coordinator for Dickey County.

Little Texas, Johnny Holm Band headline LaMoure festival
Tickets for the second annual Jake Star Festival in LaMoure, N.D., go on sale today. The festival will be Aug. 16 and 17 at the LaMoure County Memorial Park. Jake Star, LLC, Director of Operations Corey Bliss said the festival started last year to help the LaMoure community heal after the death of 8-year-old Jacob Shockman in April 2012. The festival is named in his honor. “We wanted to do something to give people a chance to look past the death and do something fun for the community,” Bliss said.

Class B baseball: Pitching leads Hornets to win
Harvey-Wells County’s pitching staff of Austan Schmidt, Todd Selzer and London Littlefield combined to strike out 15 batters as they one-hit Dunseith to win 21-0 in five innings in Harvey on Tuesday. Schmidt started the game and got the win. The Hornets broke things open with a 16-run bottom of the third, while the visiting Dragons committed six errors in the game.
