Class B baseball: Pitching leads Hornets to win
Harvey-Wells County’s pitching staff of Austan Schmidt, Todd Selzer and London Littlefield combined to strike out 15 batters as they one-hit Dunseith to win 21-0 in five innings in Harvey on Tuesday. Schmidt started the game and got the win. The Hornets broke things open with a 16-run bottom of the third, while the visiting Dragons committed six errors in the game.

Valley City State inks LaMoure’s Shockman
Another LaMoure Loboe has signed with the Valley City State men’s basketball team. Skylar Shockman, a 2012 graduate at LaMoure, has signed with the Vikings. The 6-foot-7 Shockman currently attends Minnesota State University-Moorhead.

LaMoure’s Thielges signs with VCSU
LaMoure native Tyler Thielges has opted for a change in both geography and sports. The 6-foot guard, who earned Region 3 Senior Athlete of the Year honors in basketball at LaMoure High School, has decided to transfer to Valley City State University and play basketball for the Vikings next season. Thielges currently attends South Dakota State University in Brookings, where he was a freshman redshirt quarterback for the Jackrabbits last fall.

Despite his team being incredibly undersized, LaMoure-Litchville-Marion coach Darren Thielges refused to play zone against Dickinson Trinity in the opening round of the Class B state tournament. “I talked to coaches and they said, ‘You’re gonna have to zone them,’” Thielges said. “I thought about and we talked about it, and I said, ‘That’s not who we are. We’re a man-to-mean team.’”

Mustangs, Loboes meet for trip to state
Tenth-ranked LaMoure-Litchville-Marion and South Border meet tonight at the Civic Center with a trip to state on the line. The two teams met back on Feb. 9 with the 21-2 Loboes winning 66-51. The Carrington Cardinals got off to a bit of a slow start, and they were never able to fully recover during the championship game of the District 7 tournament at the Devils Lake Sports Center on Tuesday night. Four Winds/Minnewaukan’s Collin Delorme (14 points) and Austin Longie (11) led 9 players in scoring, as the Indians won the District 7 crown with a 54-51 victory over the Cardinals.
