Killdeer is mourning the loss of longtime community member and 2009 Roughrider Commission Rancher of the Year Thorris Sandvick, who is fondly remembered as a rodeo enthusiast and a good man. Sandvick was born near Killdeer and attended country school and Killdeer High School. At the time of his death, he lived on his farm north of Killdeer.

Fights, particularly those in or near bars, are becoming more commonplace in Dickinson as the population increases with an oil boom. In 2009, the Dickinson Police Department received 12 calls for fights all year, Capt. Dave Wilkie said. So far this year, there have been 90 calls for fights, 45 of which have been to bars.
