WATFORD CITY, N.D. —Konnie and Sharon Norstog don’t think they deserve the new income from the minerals they own, so they’re giving much of it away. The retired Watford City ranchers say the best part about the oil boom is they can give more to their favorite charities.

East meets west as students live history
A class meant to give students experiential learning for the semester will begin this month. Not everyone can get to the British Isles to visit Stonehenge or to Ireland to check out the thousands of cairns marking special locations along the coastline. We can log onto sites showing the armor worn during the Crusades and see photos where Canterbury Tales was set, or the important architecture of the Middle Ages that dot almost every country in Western Europe.

Ted Dowell’s fine craftsmanship
I learned recently that knifemaker Ted Dowell of Bend, Ore. died at age 83 in October. Most readers probably never have heard of him, but he was a founding member of the Knifemakers’ Guild in 1970, and I have owned one of his fine knives since the late 1970s. Dave Petzal, shooting editor of Field & Stream magazine called him “a dedicated elk hunter and good guy. If you happen upon a knife with his TMD stamp, you are looking at the best that can be done with a piece of steel.”

Many single women, a key bloc, are avoiding GOP
DENVER (AP) — Sara Stevenson spends her working hours surrounded by Republicans, namely the married men who work alongside her in a Denver oil and gas firm company. But after hours and on weekends, she usually spends her time with other single women, and there's not a Republican in sight among the bunch.
