House rejects oil tax reform bill
House legislators Wednesday rejected an oil tax reform bill that would have lowered the oil extraction tax, closed a tax loophole for low-producing wells and set up guidelines for a new tribal tax agreement. Rep. David Drovdal, R-Arnegard, said the conference committee met 17 times to reach a compromise on House Bill 1234, which aimed to reform several oil tax provisions while staying close to revenue neutral for the state. The bill failed 71-21.

Crew camp plan: Proposed crew camp ordinance receives more changes
A proposed crew camp ordinance still needs some work, the Stutsman County Planning and Zoning Board decided Tuesday. The Zoning Board and an audience of about 20 people met to discuss the second draft of a county ordinance that would regulate crew camps in Stutsman County. Though the county currently has no crew camps, it is working on updating its ordinances in case someone wants to build one — perhaps to house construction workers building at Spiritwood Energy Park.

Seeing Saturn and the Seeliger Effect
This weekend we looked at Saturn from the unique perspective called opposition, when a planet is directly opposite the sun in the sky. Seen from space, Saturn is lined up with Earth on the same side as the sun. Seen from the ground, the planet rises at sunset, remains visible all night and doesn’t set until the sun rises the next morning. Talk about opposites — the two bodies can’t get any farther apart.

Jimmie quartet shines
Track-niks know that running alone usually makes it tough to put up a time. Apparently, that’s not the case for the Jimmies’ 3,200-meter relay team. Running alone on the Concordia College track Monday at the Cobber Twilite meet, Nikki Iverson, Rachel Perish, Samantha Goff and Aleona Reyes had plenty of pace to post a season-best time of 9:30.40 to earn a trip to the NAIA national meet in Marion, Ind., at the end of May.
