Letter to the editor: Lawmakers should get to work, skip the politics
Did you know that Congress worked only 150 days last year? Of those days, only three hours a day were spent working on legislation. The rest of the time was spent on fundraising and politicizing. They also received a raise this year!

Letter to the editor: Consider alternative ways to reduce school violence
Sometimes I wonder not if this country is going insane, but why it has happened. With another tragic school shooting taking more innocent lives, the talking heads running the show are trying to figure out what to do to put an end to the violence that seems to have over taken our society.

Letter to the editor: It’s time to abolish property taxes in the state
Like many others I received my annual property tax bill from the county confiscator and I’m hot boiling mad. Our legislators talk about how we need to fix the property tax system, having tried some 135 times to fix the system resulting in nothing more than enabling local subdivisions to have unlimited spending power.

Letter to the editor: It’s important to be careful in deciding support of groups
The election is over but it seems that we are fed with a contentious “soup” of fiscal cliff competition from the news media and Washington as well. Sometimes I feel that news reporting wishes to keep up a sense of tense expectation for the purpose of selling news articles. Perhaps I am wrong, but it does not seem as if the election rhetoric has been allowed to mellow out.

Letter to the editor: Congratulations to our newly elected local leaders
The political campaigns are over, and the work for the people begins. Sincere condolences to all those who ran and did not get enough votes to get the position they worked for. Having been in that situation many times myself, I know it is not a pleasant experience. Congratulations to our newly elected District 12 Sen.-elect John Grabinger and Reps.-elect Alex Looysen and Jessica Haak.

Letter to the editor: Without action, beauty will be gone in western N.D.
Many recognize that the natural resources and wide variety of landscapes in North Dakota are indeed a treasury, affordable to all income levels. Personal activities can range from exploring by camping, hiking, bicycling, horse backing riding, birding and photography or hunting for artifacts, fossils or wild game.

Letter to the editor: Offer the rich an alternative to high taxes that helps U.S.
Candidate slogans have pummeled us for the past year or so. “Taxes kill jobs,” “taxes stifle growth,” and so on. Neat slogans, endless repetition, but little supporting proof. Is that because the evidence is self-evident and need not be displayed, or is it because voters are incapable of understanding the evidence or the argument?

Letter to the editor: Conrad thanked for support of conservation fund
U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad deserves special thanks for his support for the Land and Water Conservation Fund. LWCF is not funded by taxpayers, but rather from federal offshore oil and gas royalties.

Letter to the editor: Christmas is about Jesus, the genuine Christmas miracle
I write this letter with sadness for so many victims who have lost children. And with disgust, that respect for human life decreased since 1976.

Letter to the editor: Changes coming to make Jamestown schools safer
A week ago, our safe little world was shook up again as we witnessed another senseless rampage, this time in Connecticut. It seems inconceivable that someone could come up with a plan to murder little kids, still full of the innocence of childhood. The story continues to rip at our hearts this week as we witness the funerals for the students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School. I don’t know what the answers are to these violent outbreaks.

Letter to the editor: ‘Fiscal cliff’ is a myth created by politicians
There is no catastrophic “fiscal cliff.” Both parties have embraced the term “fiscal cliff” to describe a return to the federal tax rates that existed before both political parties passed the “gift” of the Bush tax cuts in 2001.

Letter to the editor: City, Rural Water should stick with original contract
The current issue before the city of Jamestown and the Stutsman Rural Water District is in fact a simple one, which we could call “understanding water issues 101.”

Letter to the editor: Local officers deserve thanks for Cops ‘n’ Kids program
I want to send a giant “thank you” to the members of the local Fraternal Order of Police and all of the officers and personnel who give of themselves each year to make Cops ‘n’ Kids possible. We have had the privilege of participating for several years and it is hard to say who has more fun — the children or the officers.

Letter to the editor: Lame-duck lawmakers should not decide on treaties
Believing international treaties too important for lame-duck sessions with many retired and defeated senators voting, 37 senators signed a letter to leaders Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell promising to oppose consideration of treaties during that time. Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D, is one of these signers.
