Critics question quality of Rough Rider portraits
Portraits of the famous North Dakotans who have won the state’s highest honor, the Rough Rider Award, are becoming pretty consistent. Critics would say they’re consistently, um, busy — more of a visual “shopping list” than an artistic representation of a North Dakota native who has earned national recognition.

U.S. added 88,000 jobs in March
U.S. employers added just 88,000 jobs in March, the fewest in nine months and a sharp retreat after a period of strong hiring. The slowdown may signal that the economy is heading into a weak spring. The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate dipped to 7.6 percent, the lowest in four years, from 7.7 percent.

Minn. wagon trip to raise funds for hospice
Rufus and Rowdy are finally trained and harnessed and a date for takeoff is set. Teamsters Joe Dahlby and Earl Speckman will hitch up those mules to a covered wagon and head for Joice, Iowa — by way of Granada, Minn. Dahlby said he has been planning the trip for several years, spurred by a three-pronged passion. Joice, population 221, is his hometown. His father homesteaded in 1910 near Watford City, N.D., with a team of mules. And, most important, the trek will raise funds for local hospice and palliative care programs.

Letter to the editor: Republicans want more intrusion in people’s lives
In this year’s state legislative session, I hope people are paying attention. There is a level of arrogance and contempt for ordinary citizens that can only be explained by a Republican Party corrupted by excessive power.

Decades after King's death, Memphis jobs at risk
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — They rode the streets of Memphis in creaky, dangerous garbage trucks, picking up trash from home after home, toiling for a sanitation department that treated them with indifference bordering on disdain. In 1968 those workers took to the streets, marching with civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to demand better working conditions, higher pay and union protection.

Wichita St., evens out Final field
The entire basketball program at Wichita State runs on what Louisville coach Rick Pitino makes in a single year, with money left over to purchase plenty of trophy cases for Final Four hardware. In an NCAA tournament driven by longshots and upsets, the Shockers are in many ways the oddball of the season’s final weekend: They don’t have a big-time football program like Syracuse, Michigan or the Cardinals, and they don’t belong to a major conference that enjoys a weighty television contract.
