Referral effort led by men on opposite sides of abortion debate
They are two Grand Forks men on opposite ends of the abortion issue, but Gary Hangsleben, 67, and Roland Riemers, 69, say they came together to create an opportunity for open discussion. The men are behind petitions seeking to put North Dakota’s recently passed abortion laws to a statewide vote — a move they believe will give all residents a chance to speak their minds.

HB 1020 would protect Fargo and protect family farms
My family farms in Richland County, North Dakota. We support House Bill 1020 and its amendments. The amendments to HB 1020 that provide flood protection for Fargo and protect our rights to live and farm as we have for generations. The F-M diversion plan now affects our ability to use our land productively.

Critics: Amended bill would ‘gut’ WSI reform
A bill intended to strengthen the opinion of a worker’s treating doctor in evaluating a workers’ compensation claim has been amended in a way that could require a hearing officer to discard the treating doctor’s opinion.

Letter to the editor: Lawmakers stood up for life in the N.D. Legislature
For too long, the leadership of the North Dakota Republican Party has squandered opportunities to lead the nation on issues of truth and integrity. It tends to function as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Republican National Committee.

Creating its own monopoly
Somewhere along the line, the idea behind the Western Area Water Supply Authority has changed, and certainly not for the better. The purpose of WAWS was to create a rural water system to provide infrastructure and water to cities in western North Dakota. The system would be at least partially funded by selling water to oil companies for fracking. That’s the theory behind WAWS, but that’s no longer the reality.

Letter to the editor: Taxpayer money shouldn’t be used to support jihadists
This letter is prompted by a remark made recently on local TV news as National Guard members were gearing to help with the flood protection. It was said that the National Guard is feeling the “pinch” of the sequestration of funds by Washington.

Letter to the editor: Zealots in Legislature more concerned with their beliefs
Listening to the current effort of the North Dakota Legislature to ban all abortions and give civil rights as soon as the sperm hits the egg makes me believe they are more concerned with their own personal religious beliefs than upholding our Constitution.

Oil has changed N.D.’s economic profile
The economic benefits of oil and gas production were made clear in a recent North Dakota State University study. It pegged oil’s economic impact on North Dakota at $30.4 billion in 2011. The record setting pace of increased production last year suggests the impact in 2012 was even greater. And, for every dollar spent by the oil and gas industry in the state, another $1.59 in additional business activity was generated. It’s the kind of narrative you can take to the bank.

Letter to the editor: Anti-abortion laws are result of jobs well done in N.D.
Growing up in North Dakota has forced me to shrug off all the bumpkin redneck rhetoric with which much of the nation has flagged our state. So it is with great pleasure that I listen to news reporters and read articles praising a job well done in our state.

A reader recently e-mailed his inventory of ammunition components — powder, primers, and bullets — to get my opinion. I replied that with some 6,000 primers, 2,500 bullets in five calibers and 23 pounds of gunpowder, he was in pretty good shape, granted he had sufficient empty casings to load.

Letter to the editor: N.D. voters shouldn’t have to hand an ID card to vote
Every election season, you’ll read at least one article in local media or national, that points out that North Dakota is the only state in the union that doesn’t require voter registration. Should we be ashamed of that? Of course not. North Dakota is a state of pioneers, and I think we take a lot of pride in that spirit. We do things differently here. We do things better.
