Stocks gain after signs of increased employment
The stock market is all about jobs this week. Stocks rose Thursday after unemployment claims fell to a five-year low. A day earlier it was just the opposite; the market slumped after companies added just 119,000 jobs in April, the fewest in seven months, according to payroll processor ADP. And stocks could swing again Friday when the government’s closely watched monthly employment report is released.

The Sun ran an ad in the April 24 edition on page A9, paid for by the Progressive Change Committee, which included my name. I have gotten two telephone calls at my home asking me about what PCC means to say in this ad. I would like to clarify for the community what I mean by putting my name on it.

Online sales tax
The U.S. Senate is poised for a final vote Monday on a bill that would give states the authority to force online retailers to collect sales taxes on goods shipped to places like North Dakota and Minnesota. The House will eventually vote on the bill, too, and unlike past attempts there is growing consensus a law will be enacted this time around. “It’s about damn time,” said Greg Danz, owner of Zandbroz Variety store in downtown Fargo.

Depth key for Chicago
The Minnesota Wild got a terrific effort from Josh Harding in a tough spot. Ryan Suter helped Minnesota keep Chicago’s high-powered attack in check, and the Wild still lost Game 1 to the Blackhawks. The problem for Minnesota is the same one Chicago presented all season long to the rest of the NHL, and it could become even more important as the series moves forward.
