Letter to the editor: Times have changed and new gun laws are needed
The Sun ran an ad in the April 24 edition on page A9, paid for by the Progressive Change Committee, which included my name. I have gotten two telephone calls at my home asking me about what PCC means to say in this ad. I would like to clarify for the community what I mean by putting my name on it.

Online sales tax
The U.S. Senate is poised for a final vote Monday on a bill that would give states the authority to force online retailers to collect sales taxes on goods shipped to places like North Dakota and Minnesota. The House will eventually vote on the bill, too, and unlike past attempts there is growing consensus a law will be enacted this time around. “It’s about damn time,” said Greg Danz, owner of Zandbroz Variety store in downtown Fargo.

Letter to the editor: Hoeven and Heitkamp did well with votes for gun rights
The U.S. Senate recently rejected universal gun background checks, thanks partly to Sens. John Hoeven, R-N.D., and Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D. However, President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-N.D., will continue attacking the Second Amendment.

Heitkamp in national spotlight: Issue that once hardly came up is quickly becoming a defining one
As Heidi Heitkamp eked out a North Dakota Senate race decided by less than 3,000 votes last year, one topic that rarely came up was gun rights. Now that Heitkamp is a freshman senator in Washington, an issue that once hardly registered has quickly become a defining one.

Heitkamp defends vote: U.S. senator: ‘I have an obligation to listen to N.D.’
Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., believes she did right by the majority of North Dakotans when she voted against extended background checks for gun buyers during a Senate vote Wednesday. That didn’t stop the Peace Garden State’s junior senator and most visible Democrat from being the target of criticism within her party, both within the state’s borders and nationally.

Obama, victims' families overcome by gun owners
Four months ago, President Barack Obama promised a grieving nation he would do everything in his power to change gun laws after 26 students and staff were shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Turns out his power and the impassioned pleas of devastated families were no match for the force of gun rights advocates in Congress and across the nation.
