Opinion Corner: Sits and starts for week 9
As we head into week 9, the inconsistencies of players continue to boggle the minds of fantasy owners. As difficult as it is to predict this season’s Super Bowl champ, it is just as difficult for some to decide on whom to start on a week-to-week basis.

Opinion Corner: The NFL is certainly filled with parity.
The Minnesota Vikings’ 21-14 win over Arizona on Sunday didn’t feel like two 4-2 teams. Not often, but occasionally, I think back to the Minnesota Vikings in 1998 and how they would probably roll over this year’s team, though this year’s Vikings do have a better defense.

Fantasy halfway point
With week 7 in the books, the majority of fantasy leagues are now at the midseason point. So, what have we learned after 7 weeks?

Opinion Corner: Packers, Giants prove capable
Last week was a stark reminder that underachieving teams are still dangerous on a weekly basis in the NFL. The Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers found that out, losing to the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants, respectively.

Opinion Corner: Time to shake up your team?
As you stare at your roster and projected points for the week, ask yourself if you’ll find the answers to your problems on your bench? Are your draft day picks and the leftovers that were picked up off waivers really going to bring home the championship?

Opinion Corner: NFL can be humiliating
I guess I should be as proud of my near-hits as I am disappointed in the picks I blow by a mile. I did pick the Bengals to beat the Jaguars 27-10 and they won 27-13. Likewise, I said the Bucs would win over the Redskins 24-22 and they won 24-21 (not sure why I used a weird number like 22).

LOS ANGELES — The Emmy Awards refused to play it predictably Sunday, with awards going to Damian Lewis and Claire Danes of “Homeland” and Jon Cryer of “Two and a Half Men” and Jimmy Kimmel proving a game but uneven host.

Manning throws for 510 yards in Giants’ win
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Eli Manning came up with a near-record performance in throwing for 510 yards, and Andre Brown scored on a 2-yard run with 31 seconds left to lift the New York Giants to a wild 41-34 victory Sunday over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Opinion Corner: NFL banks on QBs
Above-average quarterback play seemed to be the theme to last week’s NFL games, and when I say above-average, I’m talking about the young quarterbacks who happened to fare well.

49ers stave off Packers’ rally
GEEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — San Francisco’s defense smothered Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense for most of the game, then made one last stand to stop a late rally in the 49ers’ 30-22 win.

Opinion Corner: Picking the NFL weekend
Picking NFL games is like trying to figure out how important strength of schedule is for each team. You’d like to assume that everything is neat and tidy on paper, and that there won’t be much of a problem with evaluations. Improvement from team to team has so many variables, it’s hard to get a concise reading on it.

All the pieces in place for very memorable VMAs
There may be no baby bump to talk about this year, but given its track record, the MTV Video Music Awards will surely provide some water cooler moments when the show airs Thursday.

Tips for your draft
Unless this is your first fantasy football season, you know it doesn’t matter how much research you do, it is just impossible to know who all of the studs, duds and sleepers will be this season.

Title bout set
It was better late than never for Tolna Thursday night. Shut out through five innings, Tolna got a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and it was enough for a 2-1 win over LaMoure in semifinal action of the Class A state tournament at Jack Brown Stadium.

Opinion Corner: Contracts for RBs are tricky
Running backs are almost always the most highly-touted picks on NFL fantasy football draft boards across the nation each preseason. Unfortunately for the league’s top ball-carriers, NFL contracts are not based on fantasy football.
