Now is the time for a rational debate on firearms
Maybe now it’s possible for the people of this great nation to engage in a rational debate about gun violence. Maybe now, after the incomprehensible tragedy in Newtown, Conn., cultural and political leaders will summon the courage to stare down the gun lobby. Maybe now Americans of good conscience will embrace a comprehensive examination of the role of weapons in a 21st-century society that seems enamored, engulfed and desensitized by “entertainment” violence.

Kettle effort short of goal
With less than a week left before Christmas, the Salvation Army is still well short of its goal for this year’s Kettle Campaign. Lt. Mitch Brecto said he hopes there will be a push big enough to raise the $67,000 more for helping people in Jamestown and Stutsman County. “I know this last week is a busy week and we see a lot of last-minute donations,” Brecto said. “So hopefully we can reach our goal and continue with the level of service that’s needed.”

Two men worth not remembering
Well friends, it was quite a week for Major League Baseball, wasn’t it? First, Marvin Miller, one of the most despicable characters ever to soil the great game, dies. Then it was announced that three very dubious players are first timers on the Hall of Fame ballot, namely Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Roger Clemens. To be honest, I haven’t paid much attention to MLB for many years now. The greed of the players and one key free agent signing turned me away long ago.
