Letter to the editor: Offer the rich an alternative to high taxes that helps U.S.
Candidate slogans have pummeled us for the past year or so. “Taxes kill jobs,” “taxes stifle growth,” and so on. Neat slogans, endless repetition, but little supporting proof. Is that because the evidence is self-evident and need not be displayed, or is it because voters are incapable of understanding the evidence or the argument?

After 150 years: Today marks anniversary of Dakota War hangings
They were Dakota warriors. They met their fates with courage 150 years ago. The 38 condemned men, their hands bound behind them, rushed to the gallows that had been specially built for them on the edge of the Minnesota River in Mankato, Minn. They danced in place as the rough-hewn nooses were pulled over their heads. All wore white muslin caps with flaps on them, pulled down to obscure faces adorned with ceremonial paint.

Statues watch over your garden during winter
Often during the winter months, I view the garden from the inside looking out through a window. The garden can be quite appealing covered in a light blanket of snow. There is usually not a great deal of activity, but the wildlife still seems to enjoy it as much during the winter as it does in the summer season. When it is cold and windy, I much prefer to stay indoors and dream of warmer and greener months.

Opinion Corner: Peterson chasing record, MVP
If Adrian Peterson wasn’t a household name before, he is now. The Associated Press continues its onslaught of Adrian Peterson stories and deservedly so. He stands 294 yards away from breaking the NFL single-season rushing record. He should have the NFL’s comeback player of the year award locked up (my apologies Peyton Manning) and the MVP award will be dependent on these last two games. He’ll have to do something special.

Ted Dowell’s fine craftsmanship
I learned recently that knifemaker Ted Dowell of Bend, Ore. died at age 83 in October. Most readers probably never have heard of him, but he was a founding member of the Knifemakers’ Guild in 1970, and I have owned one of his fine knives since the late 1970s. Dave Petzal, shooting editor of Field & Stream magazine called him “a dedicated elk hunter and good guy. If you happen upon a knife with his TMD stamp, you are looking at the best that can be done with a piece of steel.”

GF mayor packs heat to protect family, public
The Connecticut school shooting that killed 27 is one reason Grand Forks Mayor Michael Brown packs heat. Not many know it, but the part-time mayor and full-time obstetrician at Altru Hospital, has a permit to carry a concealed handgun and he does, sometimes at local restaurants or even at an occasional city meeting.
