Trial begins for parents of dead Dickinson infant
Parents of an infant who died less than two years ago with illegal drugs in his system pleaded not guilty to child abuse charges Monday at a preliminary hearing in Southwest District Court in Dickinson. Andrue Saunders and his ex-wife, Theresa Saunders, both born in 1989, are charged with Class C felony abuse or neglect of a child. The couple also have a second child.

With prolonged rain, floods return
Rising waters in Crystal, a small town in northeast North Dakota, began driving people out of their homes Monday evening as heavy rains pushed rivers back up to flood levels around the region. Monday rainfall sets record in Jamestown
The rain lessened in severity but did not stop falling Monday throughout North Dakota, setting a new one-day record total for May 19 in Jamestown. Todd Hamilton, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Bismarck, said Monday that on Sunday 0.99 of an inch of rain had fallen at the Jamestown regional weather station, beating the previous May 19 total 0.34 of an inch recorded in 1983.

JSDC may back SCDRC grant request
The Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corp. may provide matching money for a grant application made by the South Central Dakota Regional Council. Test scores: All but one school in JPS fail to meet AYP standards
All but one of Jamestown Public Schools failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress this year as defined by federal No Child Left Behind legislation — with reading scores up from last year and math scores down slightly. “Obviously, we’re disappointed we didn’t make AYP in more of our schools,” JPS Superintendent Bob Toso said at Monday’s meeting of the Jamestown Public School Board.
