Interior issues new drilling rule on public land
Companies that drill for oil and natural gas on federal lands will be required to disclose publicly the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing operations, the Obama administration said Thursday. The new “fracking” rule replaces a draft proposed last year that was withdrawn amid industry complaints that federal regulation could hinder an ongoing boom in natural gas production.

Signs of a slowing economy combined with comments from a Federal Reserve official helped pull the stock market down Thursday. There was plenty of discouraging news. Applications for unemployment benefits rose last week and manufacturing slowed in the mid-Atlantic region. Wal-Mart sank after warning that its customers were spending less at its stores.

Swept away: Jays take two from Century
Ben Walz provided the kind of timely hitting needed to beat Bismarck Century on Thursday. The offense was mostly stagnant, but it was Walz’ two-run double in the second inning that lifted the Jamestown High School baseball team to a 4-2 victory in West Region action at Jack Brown Stadium. If that wasn’t enough, Walz drilled a two-run single up the middle to lift the Blue Jays 2-1 in the nightcap.
