Jays, Jimmies get some holiday rest
The Blue Jays and Jimmies will get down time for the holidays. No team at either Jamestown High School or Jamestown College will play before Dec. 27. That’s when the Blue Jay girls hockey team takes its sparkling 7-1 record to a tournament in Crookston, Minn. Jamestown will play Park Rapids (Minn.) and Grand Forks Dec. 27 and 28. The Blue Jays just beat the Roughriders for the first time in school history last Saturday.

With Jamestown High School goalie Carissa Finck providing the proverbial brick wall, teammate Amber Schaack dealt the backbreaker. Finck stopped 32 shots and Schaack went coast-to-coast to slip the game-winner past Bismarck goalie Kennedy Blair just 39 seconds into overtime for a 2-1 victory in girls hockey play Tuesday at Wilson Arena.

Five girls score as Blue Jays off to 2-0 start
Despite a slow opening period Friday night, the Blue Jay girls hockey team is off to a 2-0 start for the first time, well, probably ever. Five players scored and Jamestown’s play improved with each period in a 5-0 blanking of Mandan. In two games, the Blue Jays have outscored Fargo North and the Braves 7-0.

Blend of experience, youth leads Blue Jays
Without question, the Blue Jay girls hockey team was Jamestown High School’s feel-good sports story last winter. The program produced a record number of victories (13) and brought home its first trophy from the state tournament — a fifth-place, consolation championship trophy — after turning heads by winning back-to-back games on the state’s biggest stage to close out the season.

Sticking it to cancer: JHS girls hockey team successful off the ice too
The Jamestown High School girls hockey team keeps raising the bar — on and off the ice. Whether it’s going 2-1 and placing at the state tournament for the first time in school history, or raising money for cancer research, coach Brad Schaack says his girls have made a habit of exceeding expectations. “I’m not sure how much higher we can go,” Schaack said. “The girls are pretty good at going all out in everything they do.”

Opinion Corner: Unofficial end of season
The Memorial Day weekend signifies different things to different people. For many it’s a long weekend with an extra day off — not in this profession, of course. In my neighborhood the normal convoy of campers and boats that line the streets and driveways were gone — escaping to relax at a lake, cabin or campsite somewhere, although I hope they brought an extra blanket or two.
