Editorial: School Board needs to revisit policies
Jamestown Public Schools should hire the best available teachers, regardless of who they are related to — but a policy should be in place to protect against nepotism and potential “good ole’ boy” hiring decisions.

Debate over morning-after pill for 15-year-olds
NEW YORK (AP) — Allison Guarino understands the controversy over new rules allowing 15-year-olds to buy the morning-after pill without a prescription. But as someone who teaches pregnancy prevention to ninth-graders in Boston, she thinks lowering the age will "help the girls who need the help the most."

Philly abortion murder trial has national impact
For weeks, jurors in Philadelphia heard grim testimony about deaths and squalor at Dr. Kermit Gosnell's inner-city abortion clinic. While they listened, the murder case reverberated far beyond the courtroom, changing — at least for the moment — the tone of the national debate on abortion.

Steve Bennion of Jamestown said he erred in his letter to the editor which appeared in Tuesday’s Sun regarding the Jamestown Public School Board’s decision not to hire Jeff Nold. One of the four hiring committee members does report to Bill Nold; Bennion had written that none do.

Letter to the editor: School Board was wrong not to hire applicant
I feel strongly the necessity to voice my dismay at the Jamestown Public School Board for denying the hire of a teacher/coach based on family relationship to a present employee in the school system.

AG: Board’s violations of open meeting laws ‘pervasive’
The State Board of Higher Education’s violations of open meeting laws are “pervasive,” and board members must complete training to avoid future problems with the law, Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said. His written opinion released Friday found two more board meetings that violated state laws in addition to one cited in an April 18 opinion, and several other instances that broke open meeting laws when a quorum of members discussed official business through email.

Trends in rifles
It was somewhat comforting, paging through the 1980 Gun Digest Review of Custom Guns, edited by Ken Warner, with chapters by John T. Amber — the latter largely responsible for the Gun Digest editions that I devoured as a youngster. Warner and Amber are both long gone, but reading about rifles circa 1980 was like going back in time to the days when I was a young man.

Letter to the editor: Times have changed and new gun laws are needed
The Sun ran an ad in the April 24 edition on page A9, paid for by the Progressive Change Committee, which included my name. I have gotten two telephone calls at my home asking me about what PCC means to say in this ad. I would like to clarify for the community what I mean by putting my name on it.

Federal priorities have us confused
Remember years ago when North Dakota lawmakers approved legislation allowing farmers in the state to grow industrial hemp, a distant cousin of marijuana that contains only tiny traces of THC, the psychoactive element of the plant? Remember the federal government’s reaction?

Online sales tax
The U.S. Senate is poised for a final vote Monday on a bill that would give states the authority to force online retailers to collect sales taxes on goods shipped to places like North Dakota and Minnesota. The House will eventually vote on the bill, too, and unlike past attempts there is growing consensus a law will be enacted this time around. “It’s about damn time,” said Greg Danz, owner of Zandbroz Variety store in downtown Fargo.

Guy was a giant in N.D.
The legacy of former Gov. Bill Guy is stamped throughout North Dakota. It spans the state, east to west and north to south, with the Interstate highways that connect North Dakota to the rest of the nation. It lights homes, farms and businesses from the coal-fired power plants and lignite industry he helped establish.

Cubs owner makes threat
The owner of the Chicago Cubs threatened to move the team out of Wrigley Field for the first time publicly if his plans for a big, new video screen are blocked, saying Wednesday he needs new advertising revenue to help bankroll a $500 million renovation of the storied ballpark. Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts until now had said nothing as dire, despite months of contentious negotiations over how to keep everyone happy in sprucing up the 99-year-old stadium in the heart of Wrigleyville on Chicago’s North Side.
