PBHS students, staff take giving on the road: Group shops here for the Angel Tree program
Students and staff at Pingree-Buchanan High School took Thursday off from classes to give back to those in the area less fortunate than themselves. With only a few weeks of notice the 84 students at the 7-12 grade high school raised $1,750 for the Salvation Army Angel Tree program. Staff chipped in an additional $385.

Lions to take part in eyeglass project
The regular meeting of the Jamestown Lions Club was called to order Dec. 6 at the Buffalo City Rotisserie Grill by President Shelley Nannenga. Mike Jan led the club in the pledge to the flag and the prayer was led by Harold Trautman. John Lokomoen passed out eyeglass collection boxes for the club’s Lions eyeglass project. Gary Speidel was song leader.

The new smoking law went into effect on Dec. 6, according to Robin Iszler, unit administrator of Central Valley Health District, speaking at the Rotary meeting last week. Central Valley Health District is responsible for Stutsman and Logan counties. This law put North Dakota with the toughest standard in the United States, she said. North Dakotans voted for the law by a two-thirds majority in the most recent election.

Jim Ukestad introduced Dave Smette and Beth Dewald at the Nov. 27 Rotary Club meeting. Smette helped as a volunteer with the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy in New Jersey. He and another Red Cross volunteer from North Dakota drove an Emergency Response Vehicle from Minot to Pennsylvania to assist with meal distribution to the residents of New Jersey. The trip took 17 hours of driving straight to Pennsylvania.
