The Jamestown Public School Board voted 5-3 against hiring Jeff Nold as a business teacher Thursday after a contentious discussion. Jeff Nold is the son of Bill Nold, principal of Jamestown High School — where the position of business teacher now remains vacant. “It’s a contentious hire,” said Diane Hanson, a member of the School Board.

A group working on a five-year strategic plan for Jamestown Public Schools has identified several general areas for the school district to work. JPS administrators, teachers, parents and School Board members met and divided into eight groups to discuss issues the district will need to deal with during a planning meeting Tuesday.

Negotiations began for a new two-year contract between the Jamestown Education Association and the Jamestown Public School Board Monday. The two groups of three negotiators each agreed on ground rules used in previous years, and proceeded to set the next meeting for 7 p.m. April 30 in the Thompson Community Room in Jamestown Middle School.

The State Senate did the right thing when it approved an amendment removing executive sessions from House Bill 1215 on March 27. The amendment guaranteed that if school boards wanted to allow guns on campus, any discussion about the issue would be done in public.
