The nearly 60,000 jobs generated by North Dakota’s petroleum industry accounted for 9 percent of the state’s workforce in 2011, according to a study released Wednesday. Oil and gas contributed more than $30.4 billion to North Dakota’s economy in 2011 — reflecting an almost seven-fold increase from the $4.4 billion in total economic contributions estimated for 2005.

Pipeline protest was a farce
Earlier this month an estimated 30,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C., to protest against pending approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would carry Canadian tar sands crude oil from Alberta (and via spur, North Dakota Bakken crude) to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast. The 30,000 figure was the organizers’ number. It’s likely fewer demonstrators were there, but it doesn’t matter if 30,000 or 30 showed up because their message was a scam.

Letter to the editor: Oil-drilling pads wasting too much space
House Bill 1348 would increase setbacks from oil wells to people’s homes from 500 feet to one-fourth mile. I testified in support of the bill. At the hearing, the North Dakota Petroleum Council made the argument that if you get setbacks to 1,000 feet or more, it will cost the surface owner the most! The reality is this would be the most effective way to make the oil companies use the new technology and build multi-pads instead of single well pads.
