It’s easy to find a young author influenced by a celebrated older writer, but for novelist Laurel Woiwode and her father, North Dakota Poet Laureate Larry Woiwode, that influence runs both ways.

Guy was a giant in N.D.
The legacy of former Gov. Bill Guy is stamped throughout North Dakota. It spans the state, east to west and north to south, with the Interstate highways that connect North Dakota to the rest of the nation. It lights homes, farms and businesses from the coal-fired power plants and lignite industry he helped establish.

Cubs owner makes threat
The owner of the Chicago Cubs threatened to move the team out of Wrigley Field for the first time publicly if his plans for a big, new video screen are blocked, saying Wednesday he needs new advertising revenue to help bankroll a $500 million renovation of the storied ballpark. Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts until now had said nothing as dire, despite months of contentious negotiations over how to keep everyone happy in sprucing up the 99-year-old stadium in the heart of Wrigleyville on Chicago’s North Side.

Opinion Corner: Only so much can be done indoors
Practicing a spring sport inside is akin to a kid getting a bike for Christmas. Sure, you can play a little inside, maybe even take it out to the garage where you go in circles, which is fun for about 45 seconds until you realize this is the extent of your enjoyment until the weather warms up and the snow melts.

Letter to the editor: Media supported candidates they are now criticizing
I’ve enjoyed reading the editorial boards of the major North Dakota newspapers, owned mostly by Forum Communications, rail against the irresponsible actions taken by the Republican supermajority in the 63rd legislative session. What I find interesting, however, is the lack of transparency from these same editorial boards about the fact that they endorsed every one of these candidates. Every. Single. One.

Letter to the editor: Nold caught in crossfire of dysfunctioning School Board
The Jamestown Public School Board members who voted to refuse the hiring of Jeff Nold have sent an arrogant message to every staff member of our public school system. They have refused to hire an experienced teacher who has already been a state championship coach simply because of who his father is.

Letter to the editor: Remember those who lost their lives on the job
Working people have come together year after year to call for better working conditions and stronger safety protections on the job. As a result, workplace deaths and injuries have declined significantly, exposure to hazards and toxic chemicals like asbestos and lead have been reduced and far fewer workers are dying from trench cave-ins or from being caught in dangerous machinery.

Erdrich richly deserves award
Louise Erdrich richly deserves her selection as the latest recipient of the North Dakota Rough Rider Award, which honors current or former North Dakotans who were influenced by the state and achieved national recognition in their field. That’s certainly the case with Erdrich, who grew up in Wahpeton and has won many accolades as an author, including the National Book Award in 2012 for her last novel, “The Round House.”
