Zoo deaths bring security concerns to light in Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. — No one knows whether three hours could have made a difference to the animals that died in flash flooding 11 days ago at the Lake Superior Zoo, but that’s how much time passed between the sounding of an alarm at the Polar Shores exhibit and the time zoo officials knew they had a serious problem.

Duluth zoo suffers losses in flood
The animals never had a chance. The floodwaters at the Lake Superior Zoo rose several feet Wednesday morning, completely engulfing three bird habitats and washing away all of the animals in the barnyard exhibit. By the time the waters receded, zoo staff said three of its birds had drowned, turkey vulture, a raven, a snowy owl; of the barnyard animals, only a miniature horse survived, while six sheep, four goats and a donkey died.

Remembering fine partners
An old “The Born Loser” cartoon I still have somewhere shows the little bald fellow in a small boat on a pristine lake. He expounds on the beauty of the place and talks up the experience while his grumpy wife sits silently in the boat, facing away. Finally he ventures, “What do you think of it?” She answers, “Sort of like being in jail with a chance of drowning.”
